Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center Resumes Surgeries

Aug. 12, 2024
After a ‘mysterious residue’ was found on sterilized equipment in early May, the center officially resumed surgeries on Aug. 12.

According to an Aug. 9 article from Colorado Public Radio (CPR), Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora resumed all surgeries on Monday, Aug. 12 after halting all surgeries in early May due to a “mysterious residue” appearing on sterilized equipment.

We reported on the incident in June.

The CPR article says that during the time surgeries were halted, 608 procedures were postponed or referred to another facility.

Further, “Hospital care teams are now working with veterans to make sure their procedures are rescheduled.”

The article also provides a statement from Michelle Mountfort, associate director of patient care services, VA’s Eastern Colorado health care system, she said, “The reason we've had this two- or three-month gap was to ensure that safety is in place. [The patient’s safety] “is our number one priority. We want to do their procedures, we want to give them high quality care, and we will only do it in a safe environment. The care that they got was safe and the care that we'll provide going forward is safe.”
