New H5N1 Detections in Poultry Flocks Reported in Nine States Over Past Two Days
Over the past two days, “more H5N1 avian flu detections have been confirmed in poultry flocks in nine states.” CIDRAP has the news.
Among the new detections is a “massive layer farm in Pennsylvania that has nearly 2 million birds.” Layer firms have been “hard hit in multiple states, and the latest event in Pennsylvania’s Dauphin County will likely add to ongoing egg supply shortages. The virus also struck another commercial farm in Pennsylvania, a broiler facility in Cumberland County that has 30,000 birds.” Nine more commercial farms in Ohio confirmed cases as well.
Since the outbreaks of H5N1 began in early 2022, “the outbreaks have led to the loss of a record 156 million birds across all 50 states and Puerto Rico.”
Additionally, a spokesperson from the Nevada Department of Agriculture has said that there have been detections of both the D1.1 and B3.13 H5N1 genotypes in the state. The latest detections involved the D1.1 genotype, which has been “linked to two severe human infections.”
