UChicago Medicine and Local 73 SEIU Agree on New Contract
On July 20, six days after the initial news, UChicago Medicine and Local 73 SEIU agreed on a new contract.
A press release on the situation says that “The deal is more than UCMC wanted to give and more than they offered before the strike started. We got 5%, 3%, 3% with an $800 bonus, improvements in shift differentials, and stronger language on holidays, bereavement, and Advancement to Operating Engineer.”
“This is the best contract I’ve seen in my time here at the hospital,” said Justin Babitsch, Painter of 12 years. “Our ULP Strike sent a strong message to management for our bargaining in future contracts.”
“I want to thank everyone for standing strong on the picket line every day. This is the strongest I’ve ever seen our unit. They know we will not lay down for them ever again,” said Vincent Muhm, Operating Engineer. “And thanks to President Palmer and Executive VP Jeff Howard for standing with us.”
We reported on the initial news on July 12. The strike began on July 14.
