Reuters reported on April 8, that President Donald Trump will soon announce tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals.

Reuters said, “Speaking to an event at the National Republican Congressional Committee, Trump said the tariff will incentivize drug companies to move their operations to the U.S.”

Reuters wrote that Trump said the U.S. will be introducing “major” tariffs on pharmaceutical imports.

According to the American Medical Manufacturer Assocation, the U.S. relies heavily on pharmaceutical imports from other countries. In 2022, it imported around $168 billion worth of pharmaceutical products, making it the world's largest importer. China is the leading producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) essential for both generic and brand-name drugs, high tariffs present a significant risk to the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, healthcare providers, and consumers.
